RECAP: 2026 Las Vegas Classic - Game 5 - Vanderbilt vs. Oregon

Oregon held on to defeat Vanderbilt, 6-4, Sunday at Live Like Lou College Baseball Classic.

LAS VEGAS - The No. 24 Oregon Ducks survived a late-inning scare from the No. 22 Vanderbilt Commodores in their 6-4 victory Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Live Like Lou College Baseball Classic at Las Vegas Ballpark.

With the wind blowing out, the Ducks (10-1) and Commodores (7-5) combined to smash seven home runs - only one of which was not of the solo variety - in the bout between squads ranked in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

Oregon staked itself to a 6-0 lead through six innings of play, but had to hold off a Vanderbilt offense that only registered two hits through that same time frame. Through those six innings, the Ducks had six hits to build their six-run edge; however, they were held scoreless the remainder of the affair despite scattering seven hits and leaving six runners on base.

Maddox Moloney got the game’s scoring started with a homer in the second. Ryan Cooney and Jax Gimenez upped the lead to 3-0 with consecutive run-scoring base hits - a two-run double and an RBI single. Homers from Brooke-Lee Mabeus and Dominic Hellman in the fourth and sixth, respectively, capped Oregon’s offensive output on the day.

The Commodores began to right the ship in the eighth with a four-run outburst backed by a trio of home runs. Korbin Reynolds led off the inning with a solo shot, while Mike Mancini and Braden Holcomb provided back-to-back shots. Mancini stepped up with two outs and one on after Brodie Johnson reached via a walk issued by Oregon reliever Toby Twist. Holcomb’s blast was off newly inserted reliever Luke Morgan’s second pitch that traveled 461 feet.

Vanderbilt made things interesting in the ninth, getting three of the first four batters on base due to ineffective pitching - all walks. The first two free passes were served up by Oregon reliever Blake Crawford, while the third came from Devin Bell. Fortunately for the Ducks, Bell settled down and got the next two batters to strikeout and pop out to end the contest. With those outs, Bell secured his second save of the season.

Oregon’s Cal Scolari improved to 2-0 on the young season, shutting out Vanderbilt through six innings. Scolari struck out eight batters and was only touched for two hits and two walks.

The Commodores’ Nate Taylor (0-2) was tagged with the loss in 6.0 innings. Taylor struck out six, but surrendered six runs and nine hits.

The duo of Luke Guth and Tristan Bristow combined for two scoreless innings of relief for Vanderbilt, striking out two, walking one and giving up four hits.

The game signaled the conclusion of Oregon and Vanderbilt’s participation at the Live Like Lou College Baseball Classic. The Ducks ended their stay in Las Vegas with a 2-1 record, while Vanderbilt went 0-3.
