Game One: Oregon State 2, Houston 1
In the first game of the weekend, the Oregon State Beavers dropped the Houston
Cougars 2-1 in a thriller.
Facing the highly-touted flame thrower Dax Whitney (1-0) for Oregon State (5-3), the
Cougars (6-3) drew first blood on a Riley Jackson RBI double in the first inning to make
it 1-0.
That was all the damage Houston could muster against Whitney, who went 6.0 frames,
allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out 11 and walking two. Whitney
now leads the country in strikeouts with 34 whiffs in his 18.0 innings.
The Beavers struck back in the fourth with a pair of unearned runs. After a hit-by-pitch
and throwing error, Jacob Krieg singled home Nyan Hayes to tie the game and then
scored on an Adam Haight RBI single to vault the Beavers ahead 2-1.
From there, the bullpens battled. Houston’s Richie Roman stranded the bases loaded
in the 7th and then the Cougars loaded the bases themselves in the top of the ninth.
With one out, Albert Roblez entered the game and induced a pop out before striking
out Carter Sintek to end the contest. Roblez collected his third save of the season.
Houston starter Chris Scinta (1-2) was handed his second loss of the season, allowing
just two unearned runs across five innings while striking out five and walking one.
Game Two: Alabama 12, Iowa 2
The second game of the day was torn up quickly as the Alabama Crimson Tide (8-2)
downed Iowa Haweyes (6-3) 12-2.
In the top of the first inning, Luke Vaughn pasted a three-run home run, putting the Tide
up 3-0.
The power surge continued in the third when Bryce Fowler clobbered a solo shot to
right, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Iowa then found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Gable Mitchell ripped an
RBI single, but the Tide answered with two more runs in the top of the sixth with a
Peyton Steele RBI single and a Justin Lebron RBI double, pushing the Bama lead to
6-1.
Tyler Fay (2-1) filled up the strikezone over his 6.0 innings, surrendering just one run on
five hits while striking out three and walking one to earn the win for Alabama. Iowa
starter Tyler Guerin (1-2) was handed the defeat, allowing four tallies in 2.2 frames.
In the eighth, the teams traded runs, on an Alabama fielder’s choice in the top half and
a Kellen Strohmeyer RBI single for the Hawkeyes in the home-half of the inning,
making it 7-2, Tide.
Alabama put the game to bed in the top of the ninth when Fowler coxed a bases-loaded
walk and Lebron hammered a grand slam to put them up 12-2. It was Lebron’s sixth
home run of the young season through 10 games.
