ROUND ROCK, Texas – In the first top-10 matchup of the 2025 college baseball season, No. 7 Oregon State University defeated No. 2 the University of Virginia 7-2 in the second game of the Karbach Round Rock Classic.

The Cavaliers struck first in the third inning, taking a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single by junior Chris Arroyo. However, the Cavaliers struggled to generate consistent offense after that, managing just five hits and zero runs after the third inning.

Oregon State quickly responded an inning later, tying the game at 2-2 after junior AJ Singer came through with a single down the right-field line, driving in two runs. The Beavers’ offense continued to roll in the fifth inning, breaking the game open with three more runs to take a commanding 5-2 lead. The rally began with Jacob Krieg and junior Tyce Peterson each getting a pair of singles and junior Easton Talt a walk. Both Singer and sophomore Trent Caraway then singled, scoring Talt and extending their lead.

Virginia rallied themselves in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners on base. Sophomore Eric Becker got started first with a single up the middle with Arroyo following up with a single through the right side, advancing Becker to third. Again, the Cavaliers couldn’t capitalize, as both sophomore Henry Ford and graduate student Jacob Ference ended up striking out, leaving two runners stranded and failing to cut into Oregon State’s lead.

The Beavers were not done adding to their lead, either. In the top of the eighth, junior Aiva Arquette led off the inning with a line drive double to left center. Juniors Gavin Turley and Dallas Macias both drew a pair of walks, loading the bases for the Beavers. Krieg, who finished 2-5 at the plate, drove in Arquette with a single to right. The Beavers would add another run from a sacrifice fly from senior Wilson Weber pushing their lead to 7-2.

The Beavers pitching staff was a key factor in their 7-2 win and holding a top-ranked offense to two runs. Junior starter Nelson Keljo set the tone early, allowing two runs on two hits over four innings while striking out three. Sophomore Eric Segura took over in the fifth and provided three and a third innings of scoreless work, striking out eight batters and moving to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Matthew Morrell relieved Segura, closing the game out, surrendering one hit in an inning and two-thirds. All three pitchers for the Beavers combined for 11 strikeouts, giving up six walks and two earned runs.

The Cavaliers will open tomorrow’s slate of games against the University of Minnesota at noon, while Oregon State will look to keep undefeated season alive at 4 p.m. against the University of Oklahoma.
