COASTAL CAROLINA CLUBS NC STATE, 10-3
Rodriguez grand slam, Tozzi home run help Chanticleers to victory
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freddy Rodriguez’s inside-the-park grand slam and
Domenico Tozzi’s two-run home run powered the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to a
10-3 win over the NC State Wolfpack on Sunday from VyStar Ballpark.
NC State (3-4) took a very early lead. Justin DeCriscio reached second on an error to
lead off the game. Luke Nixon followed with a double off Coastal Carolina (6-2) starter
Riley Eikhoff (2-0) to give the Wolfpack the lead two batters into the game. Eikhoff
rebounded, though, to retire 15 of the next 16 batters.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Marohn (1-1) walked Blake Barthol with two outs in the first
inning. Tozzi then bashed a two-run shot to put the Chanticleers ahead 2-1.
Dean Mihos began the third inning with a base hit before moving to second on a
fielder’s choice. He scored on a Barthol base knock to put things at 3-1.
A one-out error put Freddy Rodriguez on in the fourth. He scored from first
immediately on Jake Books’ double.
The Wolfpack came charging back in the sixth. Justin DeCriscio led off the inning with
a single and stole second base. After a strikeout, Brayden Fraasman tripled in
DeCriscio and then Alex Sosa notched an RBI single to draw NC State within 4-3.
Coastal Carolina responded immediately. Tozzi led off the sixth with a walk. Colby
Thorndyke singled and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. Books drew another free
pass to force in a run. Two batters later, a Ty Barrango sacrifice fly that turned into a
double play brought home Rodriguez to make it 6-3.
The Chanticleers put the game away in the seventh. Mihos doubled to begin the frame.
After a pair of outs, both Tozzi and Thorndyke walked. Rodriguez then smashed an
inside-the-park grand slam off the wall in right to set the final margin at 10-3.
