
OHIO STATE TAKES JAX CBC OPENER
Ellis, Lipsey homer in Buckeyes’ 8-3 win
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Both Lee Ellis and Trey Lipsey homered as the Ohio State Buckeyes knocked off the North Carolina State Wolfpack 8-3 in the Jacksonville College Baseball Classic opener on Friday from VyStar Ballpark.
With the score tied at three, an error allowed Lipsey to reach with two outs in the fifth. Ellis followed with a homer off NC State (3-2) starter Dominic Fritton (0-1) to put Ohio State (1-3) ahead 5-3.
Will Carpenter led off the sixth with a single before he advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Reggie Bussey single coupled with an error brought home Carpenter. Matthew Graveline followed with an RBI base hit to make it 7-3.
The score remained that way until Lipsey led off the ninth with a home run to set the final margin at 8-3.
The Buckeyes jumped out to the advantage in the second. Lipsey and Ellis each drew a walk before an infield single loaded the bases with no one out. A Wolfpack error brought in two runs before a safety squeeze by Carpenter plated the third run of the inning.
NC State answered the third. Ryan Jaros and Luke Nixon each drew one-out walks before Justin DeCriscio cracked a three-run home run to even the score.
Hunter Shaw (1-0) earned the victory for Ohio State with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Nik Copenhaver tossed 3.0 scoreless innings and Luke Carrell notched the final three outs for Ohio State.
