Berkland walk-off caps wild comeback win for Notre Dame
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Drew Berkland’s walk-off single in the 11th inning Sunday
capped a five-run comeback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to beat the Indiana
Hoosiers 9-8 in the Live Like Lou Jax College Baseball Classic from VyStar Ballpark.
Down 8-3, Notre Dame (3-3) came roaring back in their half of the seventh. Mark
Quatrani led off the inning with his second homer of the game. Parker Brzustewicz
and Jayce Lee each walked before advancing one base apiece on a passed ball. Noah
Coy’s RBI single played Parker Brzustewicz and then Chase Van Ameyde collected a
walk to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Mason Barth knocked in two more runs with a
single to draw the Fighting Irish within one. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second
and third, Berkland lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game at eight.
From there, the game remained deadlocked until the 11th. Lee was hit by a pitch by
Indiana (3-4) reliever Kellen English (0-1) before advancing to second on a sacrifice
bunt. Van Ameyde was also hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Jamie Zee was the third hit
batsmen of the inning to load the bases. Berkland’s single then won it for Notre Dame.
Indiana got on the board in their first at-bats. Ayden Crouse led off the game with a
walk and then stole second. He moved to third on a fly out before Brayden Ricketts
collected an RBI single for the first run of the game.
Notre Dame tied the game in the second. Coy led off with a walk and swiped second.
After a ground out, Coy advanced to third on a fly out. Zee’s RBI single knotted the
score at one.
The teams traded runs in the fourth. Landen Fry singled with one out in the top of the
fourth for the Hoosiers. A bunt bumped him to second. Fry scored on Mateo Noto’s RBI
single.
Van Ameyde was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Dylan
Passo followed with a single. A ground out advanced each runner and then a Berkland
RBI single again tied the game at two.
Indiana put up a four-spot in the fifth. With one out, Hogan Denny and Ricketts each
singled and Jake Hanley walked to load the bases. Cooper Malamazian promptly
cleared them with a three-run double. Fry followed with an RBI single to make it 6-2.
Quatrani led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run for Notre Dame to cut the deficit
to 6-3.
The Hoosiers added to their lead in the seventh. Rickets led off with a single and
advanced to second on a ground out. A Malamazian single put runners on the corners before a balk forced in an Indiana run. Malamazian scored on a Fry double to give the
Hoosiers a five-run lead.
Oisin Lee (1-0) earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

I was really impressed reading how Notre Dame kept fighting back inning after inning, especially that huge seventh inning rally and the clutch hit in the 11th to seal the win. Moments like these show why baseball is so exciting—anything can change in an instant. When I read intense play-by-play like this, I feel the same kind of unpredictable energy I get when I play Ragdoll Hit, where one move can suddenly turn the whole situation around. I really enjoyed following this recap!
